Formulary privacy policy

Last updated November 5, 2026

Formulary is a browser extension that rates the ingredients in skincare and makeup. This page explains what it sends, where it goes, and what it keeps. Formulary has no accounts, ads or analytics, and doesn't sell data.

What leaves your browser

When you open Formulary on a product, paste a list, or highlight a list and choose to check it, the text identified as the ingredient list is sent to Formulary's server so it can be rated. The server isn't sent the page's address or the product's name. Don't paste anything into Formulary other than an ingredient list, since whatever you paste is treated as one.

Like any website, the server can see your IP address when your browser connects. Formulary uses it to limit how many requests and AI lookups one person can make, holding it in the server's memory for no more than a day. It isn't written to disk or a database, or stored with your ingredient lists.

Who receives it

What stays in your browser

Formulary keeps these in your browser's own extension storage, and doesn't send them anywhere: the current tab's page address, title and ingredient text, removed when you close the tab or leave the page; recent ratings, so a product you've checked appears quickly; and your settings, such as sites where you've hidden the Formulary button. Removing the extension deletes them.

The optional "every site" permission

If you choose to turn this on, Chrome will let Formulary add its button on skincare and makeup pages and keep the panel up to date as you browse. To do that, it checks each page inside your browser to see if it's skincare. Nothing from those pages leaves your browser until you open Formulary. You can turn this off at any time in Chrome's extension settings.

Ratings aren't medical advice

Ratings are general information, and some are AI estimates that no person has reviewed. Formulary labels those. Ask a doctor or dermatologist about allergies, reactions or skin conditions.
